  2. So i read the book and have found it to be much more fascinating than I originally thought it would be. Although, to put it frankly what he says doesn't really matter much to me. However, it's quite fascinating the part in where he talds about the interracial children born fromo white masters and slave women. I wonder it is quite likely that some children would have been born with amuch lighter or whiter skin tone than most.I wonder what happened to them because quite likely the existence of white looking slave children would have most easily have aroused speculation on who the father of that slave child was. It would have been a very shameful thing had people found out that a white man had children with his slave. Of course it would also be very weird to have a slave that looked white. Now the question here was what hppened to those white looking slaves?

On another note to take was how lsaves tend to sing whenever they were sad. I think that the singing is more of a lifeline for them to concentrate on during their pitiful living conditions. The way people run to get away from their problems or to ignore them. It's fascinating how they would do something that should be enjoyed to give themselves some comfort, never knowing that the action of singing should be something to be enjoyed.

  3. Victor, all of those were good points. With regards to the singing section, I was wondering if you believe it was possible for them to sing for pleasure and for an opportunity to escape. What are your thoughts? Remember, you don't have to agree with me. I'm just curious.

  4. i think avidhal makes a good point although victor has a strong argument. i think it's what slaves feel that kinda keeps them moving on towards. i,for one, agree that singing was like a lifeline though the idea of singing for pleasure or escape is quite reasonable. we do have to remember that the events taking place in the plantations weren't always hope raisers. i believe singing was one of the main things that kept them movig on and alive from committing suicide.

  5. I think victor makes a wonderful point about the white men. What i want to know is, Why do you think that the overseers and masters didnt understand why the slaves were singing? Your response had me really thinking

  6. 1-2.
In the first two chapters of the Narrative of Federick Douglas, I was surprised when I found out that slaves had little knowledge of themselves. They didn’t even know how old they were and were only able to guess. What intrigued me was that Federick’s father was a “white man” and believed to be his master. I became to think of the relationship he would’ve had between his masters if he really was his offspring… Would it be differen’t?
Also, the unbearable scenes of slave whippings by Mr. Plummer caused Douglas to set a mindset goal to become free at last. I believe this gave him motivation to obtain his own freedom.

I think I can relate to this because of my relationship between my parents. I think that the traditional asian style of raising children mixed with my American mind set caused me to feel some sort of resemblance. Im sure I cannot even seem to imagine what Douglas has been going through but the discipline I received abled me to be who I am today. I believe the same for Douglas…

  7. i agree with victor with what he said but i would like to add a little of my own.i was surpriced on the slaves that didnt know nothing about them selfs.they didnt even know their own birthday however they would have to guess... what i liked about tha slaves and it was smart of them was when they sing to them selfs because it made them relax.now in the future no one tries to relax they try to start problems when they just could drop it and leave it..
