Homework Due 10/20/09 (considered on-time up until midnight)

Hello students:
I'm hoping that these blog posts, in conjunction with your classroom reading and discussions, are allowing you to obtain a better picture of the ways that the United States still has issues of slavery and oppression today. Below is the homework that is due Tuesday night:

1. Read the last two sections of the following link: http://www.asian-nation.org/racism.shtml.Those sections are entitled "The Formation of Solidarity," and "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment."

2. Respond to both pieces in one post of 100 words, just as you did with the previous postings. Consider your thoughts, feelings, opinions, similarities to the Gaines text, connections to discussions, and parallels to other topics we've mentioned in the past.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
I know some of you have been bummed about missing tutorials for two weeks. Fear not! Tutorials will return the week of the 26th. In fact, we will hold them on the 26th and 28th as well as twice the following week. Project presentations will be pushed to the final week as well :).

Also, this upcoming week (the 19th-23rd) will go as follows:
Monday: Reading Gaines and projects in the lab

  1. The article called “The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment” was very interesting. It connects a lot with the book we are reading in class. Jefferson was declared guilty and sentenced for death by electrocution. The reason that he was found guilty was because of the color of his skin because he never killed Mr. Grope. However, they all know that he just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The man in the article Wan Ho Lee was also wrongfully accused of giving information about nuclear weapons to China because of his ethnic background. Not only did the FBI have insufficient evidence but they didn’t let him get bail and put him in chains like a dog. Even The New York Times offended him by providing their readers with inaccurate information. They apologized for not doing proper research and for wrongfully blaming him and insinuating that he was guilty. This only happened because they found out that the FBI provided a false testimony and they took off all charges. Even so he still spent nine months in jail with shackles and chains like a slave. This shows how bad our justice system works because they always find someone else to blame, someone who doesn’t come from “Caucasia“. In other words, our society is run by prejudice and racist politics that target certain races and ethnicities simply because they have the power to do it.

  2. In my point of view I think that everyone deserves an education no matter where you come from. In the text about Asian Americans, I think it is good what all these students are doing to protect their rights. They are building organizations to unite students for the same cause. Not only Asian Americans are the only ones defending their rights, also Hispanics and Blacks. In the environment I live in the students are aware of the things that are going on. They keep up to date with situations and fight for what they need and deserve. I also think this is the right thing to do, everyone should be informed and defend what is theirs. The fight for our rights should go own, but violence should never take part. This text connects to the book by Gaines because in the book people of color cannot be smarter than the “superior” race. They can be smart, but if someone finds out, things can be very bad. I think that no one should have to hide their education because you have worked for it, you should be able to share it with everyone else.

  3. while I was reading the article "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment" make me think back to the book that we reading in class. In Gaines Jefferson is put in jail just because he was a African American boy who happened to be at the wrong place and at the wrongtime cnsider gulty of kiling Mr.Grore even that he did'nt.Wan Han Lee from the article also was consider guilty just beacuse of his background. And the false testimonity from a officier.Tis make me think of the horrible social justice who take advantage of the power they have and jugde the society by their race. Itead of find out if they are guilty or not such as Jeffersion and Wan Ho Lee.The media also tkae avantage of wrtiten things will doing a research first just because they want to take avantage.why ca not every be treated equaly and have a education.

  4. After reading the sections off the article, I found that these situations don't just act towards Asian - Americans. It goes out too all minorities. I believe that Asian - Americans set a statement that says, the more you people don't want us to be here, the longer we are going to stay. I also believe this is what keeps them so motivated to go to college; the doubt of human kind. This does not only apply to Asian - Americans, but all kinds of minorities. When I read the second section, it made me think about what we read in class. Jefferson was accused of doing something he didn't do, which puts him in the same case of Doctor Lee. It makes me question our government, second thoughts really. It's like, how can we trust you, when you make all these mistakes?

  5. This article just proves how people of different races will never be totaly united, never. We are just to different, by our cultures and our ways of life. Things are like this around the whole world not just America, discrimination lives. Everyone has an obligation to there own race. Everyone. Things won't change, no matter what happens. World peace will never happen, change will never happen. Its just the truth about the world. The faster everyone learns how to accept it the better. Gaines book is just another example, the white people say its equal, but is it really? There still racist in the book and even now there racism still. All we can do is fight thats human nature.

  6. As I read this texts, I must comment of some things; first, how can the U.S. claim that we are all created equal if they won’t do anything against the racism that still exists in this county? Is it because some that govern us are wealthy people who don’t care about anything else but the money and are willing to let anything go as long as it’s beneficial to themselves? Or is it that our government is mostly made up of racism itself? I truly don’t understand how they could send Wen Ho Lee to jail if they still hadn’t gathered evidence against him, except for a false accusation. This is like the article of racism in the military were just because an official said there was gang related activities in the force, the Latinos were targeted. Moreover, I can relate "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment” article to the Gaines book, because like to Jefferson, the government unjustly accused Wen Ho Lee of a crime he did not commit, using his ethnicity as proof of his crime.
Despite it all, something that I enjoyed as I read this article, was when the judge apologized to Mr. Lee, saying, “I sincerely apologize to you, Doctor Lee, for the unfair manner in which you were held in custody by the executive branch. They have embarrassed our entire nation and each of us who is a citizen of it”. I felt relief that even though that apology won’t undo the damage, it still shows the truth of the incompetence of the government and its failure to uphold the justice that it claims our nation has, and it also shows that not everyone government related are corrupted.

  7. In the article, there is an existence of Americans who have a strong hate for Asian Americans as well as other ethnicities. Their reasons end up being the same—they are not from this country. Doctor Lee is an example of an Asian American who was wrongfully accused. Because of his ethnicity, there was a misunderstanding that led him into jail. He was charged for 59 counts which ended up being dropped except one. Like Jefferson for the Gaines text, Dr. Lee was accused for the wrong reason. He may have a made a small mistake, but he ended up being charged for something much more. Jefferson could have been charged for stealing a few coins for a payphone, but instead, he was charged for the murder of three people. I think it was common sense that Jefferson did not commit those violent acts. After all, he would have been shot as well. However, the white jury were biased and assumed that this black American was a cold-blooded killer. Hopefully, in the book, Jefferson will grow into a man and earn his apology from the court as did Dr. Lee.

  8. I felt that the case of Wen Ho Lee was handled in a rather childish manner by the United States Justice System. They all might as well have spat on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and said “F the United States of America!” I mean, I know that the United States is still a young country in comparison to the rest of the world but does it really have to act like it’s a young country? Does the justice system have to act like they don’t know what the heck they’re doing and they were barely recently established? The United States was founded on the principals of liberty and justice for all; a promise that works against discrimination and oppression. We are supposed to be the top dogs of the world; the bar setters that all countries try to beat; the leaders in justice! Or at least that’s what I thought. Those are my views based on all the propaganda we’ve been fed our whole lives and in my opinion, it paints a way different picture than what I’m actually seeing. Concerning the racial cases of Jefferson from the Gaines book and Vincent Chin and Wen Ho Lee from this article, I think its safe to say that the U.S. government is doing a fine job in hiding the fine print on the Constitution and Bill of Rights: “this only applies to ‘true’ white Americans.” Well gee, thanks for clearing that up Uncle Sam, things are finally making sense for a change.

  9. These articles relate to the Gaines text in so many ways. First off, how racism occurs still in present day world and affects many groups of people. In this case, Asian-American people who are singled out because an over exaggerated issue. In the text, Jefferson gets accused for many charges including the murder of three men, when he is innocent, just because he fit the black stereotype in the judge’s eyes. Both the text and article show how ignorant people are and how their ways affect the other racial groups. To conclude, these situations are just in thousands that haven’t ended up in justice, and if it where up to me, I would make the people that caused these false accusation pay for them.

  10. When it comes to relating it to the book we are ready, I think Mr.Wen Ho Lee’s situation is similar of Jefferson’s. Mr. Lee was wrongfully charged for something he did not do, in this case, he was charged for 59 counts of mishandling classified information. The FBI had thought and assumed that just because of this ethnic background that he was telling the nuclear secrets to China. In Jefferson’s case, because he was black, the assumed that he had killed the 3 dead people in the store. I think that our system needs to be changed or at least, fixed. I believe many people who go jail aren’t supposed to be there while others should have been put for a higher degree of crime, but again, that’s life, and nothing is ever perfect.

  11. The articles relates to the way Jefferson was treated and how his skin color took a big place in the judgement. Just because he was colored they didn’t care about gathering information about the role he played in the killed. This was the same thing that happened in the case of Wen Hoo Lee. Racism takes similar roles in both different characters, but also in our lives, how many times we see how racism takes roll in our lives or in others? We are all human beings and deserve to be treated equally. Even though for many centuries is well known that the white race has been on top of the world.

  12. While reading "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment," I found the situation extremely similar to slavery. When Dr. Lee was "forced to wear leg shackles and chains for nine months," it made me think about how America back then used to chain slaves. This article relates to the book because both Jefferson and Dr. Lee were accused and were "locked up." Moreover, the reason the United States assumed both Jefferson and Lee as doing something wrong was because of their ethnicity. I have a feeling that the United States just wants to find some reason to put people they "dislike" into jail. I agree with Kathy when she said, "how can we trust you, when you make all these mistakes?" Even to this day, we still can't trust the government. Once something goes well, another thing contradicts it.

  13. These articles were very interestiong and connects to what we are ready about in class. The asian american people are getting targeted because of there race and noone is doin anything to stop it. In the Hoo Lee case they filed false information and sent him to jail just because of the color of his skin. Noone should have to got through problems and have to face violence just because of their skin color or what they believe in. We are all human and we should repect the opion of different people rather their white, black, hispanic, asian or whatever. I also feel that it was wrong for the FBI to accuse him of this so called crime without the proper evidence. Why do people tend to disriminste on other races? If i was the judge handeling his case i would of ben the bigger person and told the prosecuter to get evidence or let him be a free man. By reading these articles, it has shown me that racial profiling and descrimination still exist today.

  14. “The Formation of Soldiarity” and “The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment” are both very intriguing articles. Racism throughout the United States has increased over the years. The united states were a step in advance and took all the information in order for Asian American to not revolt. Thus, making it seem that they were vulnerable to every injustice that was drawn towards them. I believe that all the racism that’s going towards everybody is cruel and the main people attacking them are “real white Americans.”
In the article “The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment” was the most captivating article. In the article there is seriously beyond all doubt the most offensive, malfeasance towards Wen Ho Lee. He was put in jail for “mishandling classified information.” They denied bail and was forced to have leg shackles and chains for nine months and that wasn’t the only crimes committed towards him. He was also convicted by false evidence because he was Asian American. Now these articles are comparable to the book were readings by Gaines. “The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment” has many similar racist actions towards “foreigners” who are not considered real Americans. In the story Gaines, Jefferson is put on trial for actions he did not commit and in the article Dr. Wen Ho Lee is put on trial for false testimonies. Where’s the equality in that? People become more ignorant throughout the years passing by not noticing that there are many victims being attacked each and everyday. People need to realize that there is nothing wrong with not being "real american", because this is who we are and we shouldnt change just because people intimidate us!

  15. Wow! After reading this blogpost, I'm so shocked at how much worst I was to read than the previous one. I was frustrated at the injustice being served to the Asian Americans of how they were stripped from their rights, treated like animals, and he Americans were able to get away without any consequences.
Amazing! I wonder how does America opperate when they don't learn from their mistakes, especially when it comes to racism. The deal with Dr. Lee not being allowed to recieve bail, being held in shackles for nine months, kept in solitary confinement just because of his skin color, race, name, history? Amerocans are simply just repeating history and it's getting our nation nowhere.

  16. Statistics states that Asian Americans are undoubtedly being discriminated. They also state that when authorities try to take charge they apply the wrong enforcement. Injustice within the government. When two White Americans convicted murder they were on probation and was capable of bailed. When an Asian American was accused of false information he was jailed and chained without question.

Whether the situation was Asian Americans or Hispanics/African Americans it all came down to one conclusion, discrimination against those who are not White Americans. United States has been clearly announced that it was a free country, it allowed equality and justice and equality to all of whom liven within the country. Immigration population increased because they had fled the place they called home, into a society they believe will accept them regardless. Discrimination proves otherwise.

  18. Asian Americans have a horrible situation that i didnt know about. I never knew that colleges negelected the asian race. Because of their high percentage in certain colleges i assumed that they were able to have culture clubs and other extra curricular activities. That shocked me because i felt that it was very hipocritical of the colleges to limit students like that. they say they want to allow kids to have their education to the fullest and yet they get resticted due to stupid things like race.
I believe that something shoulds be done to the colleges who do this. Possibly a protest of all races should be held so everyone who didnt know of certain races being limited they would now know. that is what i think should be done.

  19. Asian Discrimination in the U.S. has increased through the years. Though today there is still discrimination against Asian Americans we don’t see it as much as the past years. An example of this is racial comments in colleges and universities. Students are forced to hear the taunts and racial comments of their classmates. Is scary to think that you can’t even be safe of racial stereotypes in an academic environment. After many cases of Asian Americans being violently injured, it lead them to establish a community organization that helped them to fight for their justice.
Wen Ho Lee was another victim of racism; he was arrested and charged with 59 counts for mishandling classified information. It was an injustice that he had to pay by wearing chains for nine months. After he pleading guilty he was finally released with an apology. Things like this happen all the time and we don’t even notice it because we are ignorant of what is happening in our society. We only think about ourselves and many times we don’t find it to important. We should start noticing that discrimination doesn’t only hurt those who are victims of it but our country, because after all we are all Americans.

  20. I can compare this article to the book “A lesson before dying.” Jefferson is sentenced to death even though he is innocent. Jefferson was not supposed to be sent to jail. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jefferson didn’t kill Mr. Grope but he was accused of it because of his skin color. The article is very similar to the book. The man Wan Ho Lee was accused of giving out information of nuclear weapons to China. And the reason he was accused of this even though he was innocent was because of his background. The FBI wouldn’t let him do anything, and he was tied up with chains like an animal. When Wan Ho Lee was found not guilty, he still had to spent 9 months of jail, like a slave. I believe that many racist politics find a way to defend the whites. They blame not only one ethnicity but all except for Caucasians. I find this unfair and racist. I dont have a problem with whites, but still..others need respect, not just the whites. The United States is covered in Racist politics that think they can do anything they want to other people with different ethnicity..pathetic,really.

  21. As i read the section i feel that the justice system is just being ignorent. if we had that kind of thinking know the world would be different.dr.lee was acause of mishandling classifide documents. then he is mis treated by the justice system he was denied bail.
when i read that they were organizing groups cause of the misjustice i was able to get the idea that is this what has to happen for people to change. they should not need try so hard to let the system know when to change. For racism to happen to in college is un acceptable.

  22. I want to say that I was apalled when they said that Dr. Lee was kept in solidarity, shackeled for nine months, and denied him bail. The U.S. Justice system couldn't even build a case against the man for the 59 crimes he so comitted. This was beyond wrong it is unthinkable how they treated the man simply because an FBI agent said he was a spy for China. The President Judge at least had the decensy of apologizing to Dr. Lee because he knows he seriously f-ed up on the decision. He said that they had embarassed the entire nation and the people that live in it. So thats it Ed out!!!!

  23. The artical "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment" was alot similar to the book that are reading in class. I can compare them both because Johnson was in prison for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was accused of killing a man he didn't kill but because of the color of his skin he was guilty and sentence to the eletric chair. This is alot similar to Wan Ho Lee who was blamed for things he didn't do. The FBI had accusd him of giving information to China about nuclear wepons. Although he was released he spent seven years in chains at prison which I think was unfair because he was blamed for the FBI's bad dettective work. I think they owe him a get out of jail card for his suffering.

  24. After reading the Formation Of Solidarity, it summarizes events that have occurred around the anti-Asian time period. This relates to discrimination of black people by many whites and the anti-groups who committed crimes against these people. For example, the Ku-Klux Clan was one of the associations that did not like color people. Discrimination against Asians was so bad back then that racism was in colleges. Many students were threaten and discriminated against because they were Asian. Even though others have tried to fight against these racial groups, incidents still happened. I think if it wasn’t for Asian American communities we wouldn’t have that multi-cultural diversity that we have now.

In the definition of cruel and unusual punishment demonstrates a mistake that the US government made. They convicted an Asian American named Wen Ho Lee of providing China with United States information. Assuming that it was him just because of his ethnicity they quickly punished him. Now this incident is similar to Gaines. Jefferson is blamed for a crime that he did not do but since he was at the scene of the crime and the was black they charged him. all leading to racism, its this kind of activity that is still affecting the United States and the world.

  25. this article is a really good example of racial profiling. Ha my topic for presentation! Anyways, what happened in the story was wrong and someone should not be treated that way for some information that was not really accurate in the first place. Many people today in society still go to jail for worst actions being taken then what Dr. Lee did which was a common mistake. People today should not have that mentality of others, just because of their race, they should focus on the facts, and evidence not on skin color or plain out just appearances.
In the first article about solidarity, it mention how the asian americans were being treated by society and Americans.. THey started their own organization groups that focused on observing how their race was being treated or looked at. they noticed that americans were saying things about them but keeping it to themselves, when it says institutionally. Also when the university's notice that there is threats going on in the schools and they take no actions or if they do they move slow to make that change... To END it, How Is AmeRiCA viewed, what Kind of image do we state in other countries, and people who used to looked up to us as a Powerful country?

  26. In the article, “The Formation of Solidarity” Asians were discriminated and target by other Americans. I was outraged when college students from Stanford University were threaten Asians by saying "rape all oriental bitches," "kill all gooks," and "I'm a real white American”. Asian Americans came to America to start a new life and not threaten. Nowadays if this were to still exist, the college students of the university would immediately get kicked out. Americans are frighting Asians saying to get out of their country and never come back.

In the Article, "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment” explains the unequal justice system the Americans had. Wen Ho Lee was arrested for investing a research and was charged with 59 counts of mishandling classified information. At the end, he was innocent and released, however, all he got was an apology. This was unfair to him because he spent most of his life under bars, and didn’t offer him anything else.

  27. I keep getting shocked by this article. I did not expect Asians to be treated so unjustly that way. The case of Dr. Lee reminds me a lot of Jefferson's situation. How can a person be treated like a criminal when they are innocent just because of their race. The fact that Jefferson's situation takes place years before and Dr. Lee's takes place not too long ago, is very shocking because it shows that this country has never brought fairness or equality to its people. Even in academic environments the racism still goes on, so I don't think we will ever be safe from all this madness. The stereotypes will go on forever I think and it will be really hard for people to change their minds, the only thing that is left is just to protest and make rallies and try to get support from the community there.

  28. These two articles are really compeling eventhough they take a different type if view of the social situation. In the first article it just talks about what has been done to stop the discrimination. For example the creation of activists groups such as "NAPALCS". In a way the first article leaves u with the taste that this issue is still not over giving u examples of incidents occuring in US universities. The second article is a little to shabby for me.There is great information but not enough evidence to convince me that he was being treated cruel.

  29. Who knew people could be so negative towards other races? Well in these articles, just like many of the other articles we read, it targets an ethnic group that is discriminated against. In these articles, it describes the racism facing Asian American communities. One article describes an Asian man being murdered that started an uprise in the Asian American community. Another article mentions a man named Wen Ho Lee who was treated unfairly by the justice system. I believe that racism or discrimination hits hard in any ethnic group and it shows how America is one big corrupt whether it being the justice system, economy, etc.

  30. In the article "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment" i think it could relate to the book we are reading in class because of jefferson being in jail for sumthing he didnt do and in the article Dr.Lee was blame for something he didnt do just because of his race. he was treated badly they forced him to wear leg shackles and chains for nine months even though he didnt do anything. he wasnt found guilty and justice system didnt even have prove of what he was blame for. and this shows that the U.S Justice Deparment is racist and there should be something done about this. if we want it stop people have to do a major change and make sure that this never occurs again but even though is kind of happening right now we do have to committ to making a change so the system can be FAIR.

  31. I think that Mr.Wen Ho Lee's case is a really unfair thing that they are doing to him. His situation is similar to Jefferson case in the book of Gaines. Its similar because both of them are accuse for something that basically is not their fault. Also both cases are for racism. I think that our society in this days should think more of their actions against the people they think should go to jail. I think is really unfair how people are accuse for things that they didnt do or just for their race. Everyone has the right to fight for their rights, so i think the prisoner should have the right to figth for their case, specially if they are not guilty. Also i think the United States Justice- System should look very carefully and blame the ones who are guilty, not just a random person they see.

  33. Dang Asian Americans are treated horribly. I liked how the students at the college stood up for what they wanted. However they shouldn’t have to go to that degree to get it. The school should give them what they were asking for. I was also astonished by the threats that were put up on the walls on the walls of Stanford University. Then with what happened with Mr. Lee is crazy. To accuse a person of something like that is huge but to not have any evidence is just un-American. At the end all he got was a sorry from the judge. Wow that’s real lame!

  34. Tsk,tsk,tsk...what is our nation coming to?an end? it seems like it but it's only just the beginning. "Why?" you may ask? because our nation is still young. It's only a matter of time before things get worse. Everyone in government or those who think they are actually doing something to make a change or everything better but are really being ignorant and blind(figuratively speaking)are REALLY not changing anything at all. Take a look at our nation, the societies and communities, the culture, and the people...That's the problem, the PEOPLE. Must someone really pick on someone else because they don't like the way things are? It seems to me that our founding fathers wasted all their time working on the Constitution, Declaration of
Independence, and the Bill of Rights because no one pays any Focused attention to it. If they did, which i sincerely doubt, i'm pretty sure our country wouldn't be so messed up. It's like trying to teach something to a kid who really doesn't want to learn. What's so great about being american? "everyone is equal" but then "three fifths of a man". REALLY? are you f'in SERIOUS? Everyone who comes to the U.S. comes to find a better life and make something of themselves and our best way of welcoming them is by sending them back where they came from? Well, isn't that a great welcome. I hadn't really heard that much about anti-asianism until this. Why are people who don't know how to do anything in charge? We got racist judges(who i still can't believe are judges), misinterpretations of cases leading to innocent deaths, and we got assaults.Gee,Isn't america great?

  35. Reading these articles made me realize how bad asian americans are being treated. In "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment" Wen Ho Lee is aressted for being accused of giving china some united states information. He had no bail and was forced to wear leg shackles and chains for nine months for something that the FBI coundnt back up with real support. I can tie this into the Gaines book that we are reading in class because Jefferson also goes through the same thing. He was punished with the death penalty for something he didnt do. I think that racism will always play a role in the community or justice system because of its well known backround so basically if your white i think youll have more chances of getting away with things then other races.

  36. In my personal response this whole case is harsh. It must really suck for Dr. Lee being accused for nothing-apart from the fact that he was an Asian man. Its crazy because you wouldn’t think that the government would be under all this as well. If I was ever positioned in his place I am not exactly sure how I would handle this. I think I would go crazy in front of everyone because I hate being accused of things I didn’t do. Well I guess it was very good that they said sorry. it’s the least you can give after making a person feel like they’re wrong when they are write.

  37. In my thought Asian-American's were treated brutal.Reading that colleges around the country dont allow the studies, makes the students go on strike and fight untill they get what they they want. That's supportive of them because many colleges are filled of the asian publicity and they want to get informed on their backgrounds. It was wrong of the goverment to put Dr.Lee behind bars because he was accused over something he didnt do.But on the other hand it was right of the goverment and the New York Times on apologizing to Dr.Lee on the situation because he didnt really have the chance to speak for himself.

  38. In the article “The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment and The Formation of Solidarity” is an article about how they discriminate Asian Americans. It’s hurtful knowing that we still have racism in our community. I like how the students at Wellesley College stood up and had that strike to prevent that on happening by not eating. I think it was good but they took it over the top a little. I just think that there could have been more options to choose from. The whole thing with Wen Ho Lee was just wrong because of some mishandling classified information. I think it was more than him doing that I think only because he is an Asian American and for that was racism.

  39. The Formation of Solidarity is mostly talking about Asian American discrimination mainly in the school system. More specifically the Universities. Honestly I don't see what's wrong with Universities having Asian American Studies programs if we have a bunch of other programs mainly for certain ethnicities. There are too many hate crimes committed against these races and in this case the Asian Americans to make a small problem bigger when you could easily avoid it. The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment is just... weird. I mean it makes me very mad because who does that?! These people saw that he mishandled computer data and because he was Asian American, they made it their duty to assume he just did so many beyond illegal things. Dr. Lee was mistreated horribly and I'm glad he got public apologies by the right people because he deserved it very much. This situation was a very good example of extreme racial profiling. This article made me think about what it must've been like for asians, but also any oher race because I like at the end how it says we are all foreigners, not Americans. That is definitely the truth that everyone in this country seriously needs to start gettin a hold of in their minds. We should've started many years ago, but it's better late than never right??

  40. I believe that injustice cases happened for a certain reason. It’s not a coincidence, because no one wants to be treated cruelty. Always a caused has an effect. For example in the case of Vincent Chin, the effect was that Asian Americans united and they created organizations against anti Asian racism. Comparing this with Gaines book, Jefferson would die. This would have many effects. As example this would give the professor encourage to fix this problem. Furthermore, I think that this wouldn’t change; it is like a way of thinking that would never end. A good example of the present is Aaron Price he was an intelligent boy who die at his teenage. Now his father made a leadership program in his honor that I am involved.

  41. [Maria jimenez per.4]When i read the article "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment," it saddened me a lot to know that there's a great number of people that are racist now a days. It was cruel to punish Wen Ho Lee for something he didn't do. It makes me feel unsafe knowing that the FBI would do something like, giving a false testimony towards something Wen Ho Lee didn't do just to leave him in jail. Another thing that really shocked me was the way Mr. Lee was being treated after being falsely accussed and arrested with 59 counts of mishandling classified information. They didn't let him bail out and was forced to wear leg shackles and chains for nine months. The New York Times offended him by providing their readers with inaccurate information eventhough, they apologized for not doing proper research and for wrongfully blaming him and insinuating that he was guilty, profiling racism keeps on going on in this world.

  42. What I think of document is similar to the first part. Discrimination towards people has and will continue to be a problem not only in the United States but also all over the world. When it comes to favoring a racial class, no one wins. Statistics may say one thing such as who is smarter or who works the hardest, but really, we are all human and just because we all have a different ethnicity doesn’t mean that someone is better than the other. I guess that all of the discrimination is just to make one feel powerful. Just like the article say, “…that we're all the same and that we're all foreigners and therefore, not American,” Is a true statement because we (the people who consider themselves Americans) came and took over other people’s lands and made it ours.

  43. i was surpriced about this two articles when i read them. well it actually it opened my eyes to know how poeple are about the raices. for example some people like to make a big deal a bout a raice or a color. However we are all humans we all came in this world because of god.people in this world know whats happening with the discriminaton.not just asians is blacks, mexicans, and arabics eveen a lot more. people just think is there raice cause they hear about your alot cause thats your raice.but i think that we all have the same racims tours each other.i think that this is never ganna go away because this is how people are raiced or maybe because one of these raice did some thing to them that makes them not like them anymore.

  44. After reading "The formation of solidarity" I was totally amaze that Universities is also apart of this whole rasisism thing. I think that it is horrible to do such things to people who are not "white-American".
After reading "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment" I now question if the United States Justice system REALLY brings jusice or just people's bad luck. Just because DR. Lee is Asian, it doesnt mean that he'll pass secrets on military missile systems to China. I feel that both the FBI and the Justice system should get REAL edvidence before sentencing someone to cruel punishments.

  45. Through out our discussions in class, major issues such as racism, discrimination and the violence that they involve is still impressive to know that learning centers are not the exception. Worse than this situation occurring is that authorities and society tolerate such acts. In the text posted it clearly states the lack of action from authorities. Tolerance of this issue questions highly our society's capability of living together. One can assume that the justice system is corrupt and doesn't take action to stop anti-Asian crimes, yet I say it is society who remains silent and lacks action to prevent it.

  46. Racial profiling is a major issue in the world. Most cases aren’t as big as what the media and the executive branch made Dr. Lee’s case out to be. Compared to all the things we have talked about in class, this is just another example of unfair justice that people of color must go through. I think its kind of crazy that this incident happened in modern times(1999), which shows that the United States still hasn’t made any progress and that even though we say were an equal righted country, evidence clearly shows we are stuck in neutral.

I found an obvious connnection between the last section of the link and the Gaines novel. They both tell of men who have had the misfortune of being a scapegoat for a larger, oppressive force to use to instill fear or exert their control over a target population. In the article's case, it was one innocent man who did nothing wrong being used to send a message across the entire department: "We really don't want this [useless] information getting out." and for the Gaines novel, the white authority simply felt the need to make a martyr of Jefferson because the perpetrators themselves were already dead. Reading about the Chin case deeply upset me because the murderers got away without retribution on behalf of the victim's family. Hopefully, his death wasn't in vain and similar situations will be resolved correctly in the future.

  48. While reading the article, I was really surprised that they would actually treat asians a lot worse than some other minority groups. I always thought that it was mostly targeted at African Americans and Mexicans.. but this surprises me. Asians are so nice! Anyways, this article and Gaines is similar in many ways. Like Jefferson, he didn't have a fair trial and was treated less than he was. In the article, the murderers didn't serve any jail time and when the author said "you can get a licence to murder for 3,700" it really upset me because it just goes to show that America is still like how it was back then. No improvements. That's sad.

  49. Racial profiling much! Dude, why is this happening? It's sort of a shocker to find out that Asian-Americans are also victims of oppression. I guess were all victims. But what is the point of being being called Asian, Mexican, African with American in the end when it means NOTHING in this nation! :O It's unusual to hear that these negative activities are going on but no one can pretend to be oblivious towards these issues. If this nation wants respect, they are doing a lousy job at showing it! Hurting someone else is not the right way to go! It's really sad because were in the 21st century and contemporary slavery still goes around and for whatever the case might be!

  50. I don’t thinks its fair that the life of innocent people have to be taken away in order for government or the law, to notice what is going on around the world. It upsets me to know this; nothing was done with the racism against the death of an innocent man. It is crazy what the world has come to! There shouldn’t be anymore judgments around. We should be accepted without judges. I think that something should be done to stop what is going on. I feel mad and upset at the same time. I hate when people make racist jokes because they think they’re cool. The only reason they do it is because they either want attention or they want to impress people. Wen Ho Lee shouldn’t have been treated like that. It is understandable that he did something wrong, but it does not give authority the right to treat him the way they did! Racial profiling should stop. It is an insult to everyone. It is such an injustice to the world and to others.

  51. After reading this article, it reminded me of the movie Rambo. It reminded me of this film because in that movie, asian are treated horrible and abused in many ways.I dont think that any people should be treated the way they were.Asian population today is greatly expanded throught the world and we owe them alot because of the many thing they have invented.Racism is unfortunately something we still see and have to go through today.Just as the asians were highly impacted by it,many races were too. What really suprised me was when the two white men killed the Chinese american and were only sentenced to probation and a fine.Thats a perfect example of how racism can extremely get.

  52. In the article “The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment and The Formation of Solidarity” is an article about how they discriminate Asian Americans. It's always about African Americans, Mexicans, or Asian people, NEVER white people. that's really sad. It connects to the novel we read in class "A Lesson before Dying" because Jefferson had an unfair trial and he was treated like a "hog" Racism can never be stop! Why can't everyone be friends and love each other! :(

  53. Wen Ho Le is basically Jefferson from this point of view, because they’re both blamed of doing something but they are wrongfully accused. They’re both victims of racial profiling, their ethnicity plays a huge role because people will jump to conclusions and assume the worst about ones race. I believe that the cruelty towards other minorities have no opinion or say in the judicial department. It’s one thing to be wrongly accused but to be punished unfairly in solitary confinement, it’s contradicting everything the united states stand for. It’s causing a mess and unnecessary stress.

  54. Many minorities such as Asian Americans, Blacks and Hispanics are fighting for their rights by building an organization for similar purposes. Although it is 2009 and we have a black president, it's sad to know that racial profiling is still flowing along our society. The part where Wen Ho Lee was arrested for giving China some U.S. information and chained up for about 9 months with no fair trail reminded me of Gaine's book where Jefferson goes through the same process and gets punished for something he didn't do.Overall, racial profiling is still going on in today's society and many minorities are being targeted as victims. The unjust system should be looked at and abolished.

  55. I think no one has rights to call anyone any names. This relates to the book "A lesson Before Dying". Being raped is a cruel thing to do to any human being. What the students are doing is a good thing by building an organization. They are trying to help themselves and others and its not only Asians its all kinds of colors. Everyone should get educated just like the whites and other people. I think education should never be denied to anyone because of there color or because of who they are. They never know that person might become successful. Like for example President Obama, he went through a lot of difficulties and succeeded into being the president of the United States.

  56. In the article, I was stunned to hear that this sort of profiling is even done in college campuses, I would have thought that a lot of racism has to do mostly in part with illeterate people who fail to accept diffrences, I would have never thought that educated young men and women would be dumb enough to not accept each other.
I laughed at the second artile, while i understand the severiry of unjustly putting people in jail, I laughed at the judge who apologized at the end, sorry doesn't give him 9 months of his life back. But that was the least he could do

  57. When reading the last section of the article, "The Definition of Cruel and Unusual Punishment" the book of Gaines came to mind. Dr.Lee is being convicted for a crime that he did not commit and he was crucially mistreated by the criminal justice system. In the book Lesson before Dying Jefferson as well is put in jail for a crime that he did not commit the same well as Dr.Lee! Jefferson and Dr.Lee both are perfect examples of racial profiling that occurred in the U.S. It is sad how the U.S. is seen as the perfect state that offers a better life even though slavery, sexism, racism, happens in the U.S in the daily bases.

  58. It is not surprising at all that our government would do something like what they did Dr. Lee. Just look at our past. The thing is that we as a society let this happen, and while we can blame the government, we should blame ourselves
The first article shocked me because it was an example of how discriminaton and racism had streched out everywhere, not just place wise but infustructure wise. It has streched into college campuses and institutions. I think that that is crazy. I think that although we do have racism and discrimination we are still one of the better countries in the world, im not saying that to justify what we are doing, because i think its a shame, but i just think that it shows how far away from perfect we and the world are.

  59. I am surprised to see that in 1998-1999, Asian-Americans were the most targeted. I feel surprised, because currently, Asian-Americans are not the most targeted. I am probably surprised, because when they were targeted, I was at the age of about five or six, the age when kids are oblivious to societal affairs. The second article relates to the Gaines’s text almost completely. Jefferson received the same treatment as Doctor Lee, and it sucks. I am glad that the justice system is significantly better now. It is awesome that the 59 counts were dropped eventually; however, it doesn’t clear the air. People that have had that record on them find it hard to resume their life. Jobs do not come easy to them, the community looks upon them; the time wasted is not coming back, etc. Hopefully, one day, society can “recognize that the past is bad but get passed the past,” and we can strive for a better tomorrow. - Maytin Poonsuk

  60. I was very surprised reading this article I never would have guessed that Asian Americans were targeted like this. I really never thought that they were threatened to not have education. Unfortunately I only knew the steriotype of the Asain community being very intelligent because of how seriously they take their education and now I know what really happened.
The second article is "A lesson Before Dying' completely! Dr. Lee and Jefferson were given the same treatment for the same reason and the sad thing is these are at least 15 years apart. It amazes me how the past can so quickly become our present. I wonder how it will be 15 years from now. Will we still be in an econommic crisis or will we be starting a new one. How was Obama so many questions can be answered if you just know your past, it's frightening.

  61. The first article I believe should be looked at positively. Although the reason for the many newly formed groups is a very negative thing, it has created a new form of hope as well as liberation for Asian - Americans. This first article relates to the book, "A Lesson Before Dying," because it, in a way is a form of growth and change. True, it is sad to finally realize of how much the present carries along things that are found in the past but what we have to really pay attention to is the amount of change that has occurred.
The second article normally would anger someone but seeing that there is nothing anger can do to possibly change the way people think, i'm going to remain humble. It's just upsetting to see racial profiling being put to use; it is an action.

  62. I hardly ever witness racism against Asians, I mean I do hear stereotypes against Asians, and I also know that there is racism against Asians even if I haven not seen it, because there is much hate, but I never thought about it, so when I read about it in the beginning i noticed that they talked about racism, stating that it was the south Asians that where most targeted, I myself wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an Asian and a south Asian, I'm not trying to mean anything mean, but i couldn't, not even with Hispanics, like Mexicans and Cubans, but that's beside the point, so i believe that Asians would also discriminate at their kind.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Im surprised with these articles because one,I never knew their was racism against asians, either than critisism from other people playing around. What has our country turned into over the years because I don't have a clue anymore. As we have discussed in class,I think that racism will never have an end unless somebody, one individual person would like to make that change. All it takes is one person.
I could relate the case of Wen Ho Lee to Jefferson's case because of the discrimination of people throughout the world. But one thing for sure is that racial-profiling will continue because some people were raised by discriminating parents and will keep going until the end of time.

  64. Ok. So you know how I told you that I thought this articles were pretty boring? Well I changed my mind. After actually focusing on it I came to the conclusion that its pretty interesting. I didn't think that Asian-Americans would get treated so unfair. Then again it also goes out too all minorities. What happened to Dr. Lee reminds me of Jefferson's case. How Jefferson is innocent but is still treated like a criminal for their race. Even though Jefferson's case happened a while back and Dr. Lee's not that long ago, it still shows how the world hasn't changed. It still has injustice and inequality to people. In my opinion I don't think racism will ever stop. Someone is always going to criticize someone else. Stereotypes aren't going anywhere
